Random Acts of Stupidity

The Boy Scouts of America recently stopped discriminating against gay kids. That’s good. Now they’re banishing stupid adults. That’s even better.

By now you’ve seen or at least heard about the three adult jackasses who took some kids to Utah’s Goblin Valley State Park and distroyed a rock formation that had been in place for many millions of years. A man named David Hall shot a video of Glenn Taylor pushing on the rock formation while playfully singing the pop song “Wiggle It, Just a Little Bit”. The video shows that after the rock formation had been destroyed Glenn Taylor encourages his son to share a laugh and a high-five with him. This despicable desecration would no doubt been filed away as an unsolved random act of unlawful stupidity if it hadn’t been for the fact that Mr. Hall was so proud of his video that he decided to post it on Facebook.

Glenn Taylor, David Hall and another man seen on the video were all three Boy Scout troop leaders. After this video went viral a few days ago on YouTube all three men were kicked out of the Boy Scouts of America. Good riddance. The Boy Scouts issued a statement saying that the former leaders violated the Scouts’ principle of “Leave no trace,” which it said “teaches the value of natural areas and the methods we can use to help protect and conserve these areas for future generations.”

Also, the National Park Service and the United States Department of the Interior are said to be working with the Department of Justice to file federal charges against these idiots.

The Great Firewall of China

According to statistics compiled by Internet World Stats the population of China, excluding Hong Kong and Macao, is over 1 billion 300 million people and of that population 35.7% or 477 million are connected to the Internet. Of the 477 million people regularly using the Internet in China, only 391,000 have Facebook accounts. Why? It’s because Facebook is banned by the Chinese government. The Chinese government requires all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block Facebook. Access to Facebook is available to Internet users in China only through proxy server software

For several years there have been a number of sites on the Web that can tell you if your Website or any other Website is banned (blocked) by the Great Firewall of China. Recently, a new site has been added into the mix that many believe is far superior to all the rest. Satisfy your curiosity by visiting Blocked In China to find out if your Website or any other site you’re curious about is currently banned in China.

Here’s a partial list of Websites currently being blocked by the Chinese government. Often the government will open access to a site for a few weeks or months and then suddenly block it again thus discouraging it citizens from using these sites.

This information about the Great Firewall of China was originally posted on my site, Scoroncocolo.com, in July 2011.

What a crazy week it’s been with the baseball playoffs going on and my bookie calling me ever hour or so, it’s little wonder I’ve had time to pay attention to
the recently resolved government shutdown and almost default deal. Go figure. So a little while ago I consulted my politically geeky and ultra conservative
friend Ubetal Keckurass, a local neighborhood watch captain who you would NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES want to f**k with. He patiently explained to me how during the negotiations that lead to the recent deal in the Senate and the House that reopened the government and averted a government default, the Republicans had choked. And my good friend Ubetal Keckurass suggested very forcefully that I share this video with you which he insists drives home the point that the Republican Party’s moderate wing decided to “Run away! Run away!”

Today I logged onto Register.com, the company that hosts my Website www.scoroncocolo.com, and added some code into my index.html file.

Here’s SNL’s spoof of the Government shutdown.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mghH7AbwSqI

Here’s the trailer for Alfonso Cuaron’s “Gravity” starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. This video was posted on YouTube only a few days ago and already it has almost five million views.

While it’s not exactly imax 3d, if you click to watch it full-screen it’s almost jaw-dropping.

Sure things in the news today seem really bad. There’s a hurricane in India and the U.S. government is shut down. But as the Barenaked Ladies say, “Odds Are” we’re gonna be all right. Ah, despite the fact that there is a 79% chance of Dinosaurs.

Google’s Shared Endorsements

GoogleEyesOne

At the bottom of this post I’ll show you how to opt out of Google’s Shared Endorsements with just two clicks.

So, what is Google’s Shared Endorsements? Yesterday (10/II/13) Google announced its intention to opt you into a new program that will use you to help Google sell stuff to your friends, family and co-workers. The program is called Shared Endorsements and if you have a Google account you’re already signed up to go to work for Google. Is Google offering you any form of just and fair compensation for your endorsements? No! And until they do I suggest you do like I did and resign. I’ll show you how to do that in a minute.

Here’s how Shared Endorsements works. Let’s say you follow something on Google Plus like a coffee shop or a bakery or let’s say you give a song four stars on the Google Play music service, for instance, that means that your name, photo and endorsement could show up in ads for that coffee shop, bakery or song. Yes, I said your name and photo. Google will use your Google accounts profile picture, provided you have one, and your Google accounts profile name when hawking wares to your friends.

What Google should have done, of course, is to have let everyone opt IN on this deal instead of automatically enrolling us and then giving us the option to opt OUT. But at least, unlike Facebook, (unlike Facebook – that’s funny) Google is making it fairly simple to opt out of seeming to try to sell products to our friends.

If you are logged into your Google account, this link will take you to the page where you can choose to opt out of Google’s Shared Endorsements. Once there, scroll to the bottom and look for “Based upon my activity, Google may show my name and profile photo in shared endorsements that appear in ads.” Click to un-check the box in front of that statement. And then click the blue Save button and you’re done.  If there is no check in the box, you’re good to go.

Bill Watterson, Calvin and Hobbes

LoveTheSinner

Calvin and Hobbes, Bill Watterson’s iconic serial cartoon creation, is as uniquely American as anything Norman Rockwell ever painted. From November 1985 Watterson gave us exactly ten years of his genius and then abruptly turned off the hose and millions of us C&H fanboys (and girls) have been jonesing ever since and it’s been eighteen years since we’ve had our last fix.

What do you say, Bill? How about bringing Calvin back to life. He’d be in his late twenties now. And what would this twenty-something’s relationship with a modern-day Hobbes be like? Only Bill Watterson could answer that question. And millions of us sure wish he would.

The official Apple iPhone iOS Notes app is a great way to take notes. I use it everyday. But there is a third party note-taking app I use pretty regularly too and it’s called Plain Text and it’s made by Hog Bay Software. It’s called Plain Text because that’s pretty much what it does. You create plain text files on your iPhone or iPad that, unlike iOS Notes, you can store in folders but here’s the kicker. It syncs with your Dropbox account. It works on iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.  And because it syncs with Dropbox that means it automatically works with Mac, Windows, and Linux desktop. But here is one of the most beautiful things about this app. Anything you create on this app can be edited in your Dropbox account. This truly amazed me when I first tried this. It’s cool enough that the Plain Text app syncs instantaneously in a window you have open in Dropbox but the most amazing thing is that you can start typing in that Dropbox window and everything you do in that Dropbox window will immediately sync to the Plain Text app on your iPad or phone. For a real WOW experience, try it out for yourself.

DaveBarryInsaneCity1

I just today finished reading “Insane City” by Dave Barry. Now that was fun. You’ll probably agree with me that Dave Barry is one of the funniest Americans alive today. Don’t read any part of this book in public because there’s no way you’re going to keep from laughing out loud.

I was reading “Insane City” on my Kindle this morning while having breakfast at a local restaurant and almost did a Danny Thomas spit-take. A Danny Thomas spit-take? – Google it. This book will not make you any smarter but it will make you happy, at least for a short period of time.
